Henry James Baber of Frenchay...

Henry James Baber was born in Frenchay in 1873, the third son of James and Elizabeth.

 He was a keen sportsman; cycling, football and cricket being his main pursuits.

He wrote, shortly before he died: ‘I have been associated with the Frenchay Cricket Club since 1881 and am still a member at the age of 72 years.’ It was said of him that he was ‘the life and soul of the party’.

 

Henry's sister Lilian married Louis Maggs

Henry was a baker and had his own bakery on Frenchay Hill.

Henry's first wife was Ethel Florence, born in 1879. She died in 1906. They had no children.

Henry married his second wife, Lilian, in 1909. Lilian had the Glenbrook House store, not far from Henry's bakery  on Frenchay Hill.

Ethel Kathleen Baber was baptized at St John Baptist, Frenchay, on 14th November 1909. As a child she was a member of the Frenchay Girls Friendly Society.

She Married Alan Ivor Matthews in 1937.

 

 

  

  

  

Alice Rosina Baber was baptized at St John Baptist, Frenchay, on 31st may 1914.

She married Donald Eggerton John Cannard in 1938 and their son, David Canard, kindly supplied most of these photographs.

Henry James Baber died in 1945 and was much missed.

He was buried in Frenchay parish graveyard.
