[Interesting to note that 620 pints of beer & ale were consumed at a total cost of 3 pounds 14 shillings and 8 pence - £3.14.8 and all paid for out of the money subscribed by local people. That's 3d per quart, or less than 2p per pint in today's money..!
Work on the bridge began about June 2, 1788 and the bulk of the work was completed by January 1789, just 7 months.
Further work was then commenced about July 1789 until August 1792, possibly engaged for some of the time, July and August 1789, on the reconstruction of a wall near the bridge that fell down. This was done mainly by Edward Shepherd.
Interesting that after July 1788, Ben'j Baber was recorded as Ben'j Baver. Later, during the 19th Century, the Baber family was well known in the area.
To this day, the bridge is always referred to as... 'The Subscription Bridge, Frenchay'. _
This transcription was completed 23 June 2022, which means that 234 years have gone by since construction of the road bridge began, and the bridge is still standing, although now only carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic.]
